Applied Biology
The session Applied Biology encouraged the researchers from different scientific fields to take part in this conference. The results of their work have an application in different agronomy disciplines. Therefore the presentations in this session were rather heterogeneous. They presented the results which belong to the field of plant science, microbiology, animal feeding, biotechnology, etc. This session had the highest number of contributions, e.g. 12 oral and 35 poster presentations.
The results presented during the first working day were mostly oriented toward the animal husbandry. We could hear about the effect of different diets on features of chicken meat, as well as about the effect of adding food supplements to cows’ food. One entomological paper introduced us to changes in blackfly populations along the Danube river basin. A block of presentations was of microbiological orientation. The researchers presented data on fatty acid production and phycobiliprotein content in selected strains of cyanobacteria. One presentation was dedicated to antioxidant activity of beech leaves, and one to antimicrobial activity of garlic extracts.
The second working day was oriented mostly to the results of examinations of plant species, but with rather heterogeneous approaches. Two presentations dealt with the effect of different factors and application of growth regulators on tomato and apple fruits. These findings were also commented in light of proper storage conditions, which was also the subject of one more presentation about evaluation of changes in volatile compounds during storage of herbs. One presentation was about invasive species in Austrian forest habitats.
Poster presentations gave an impressive picture of how data from different disciplines could be applied in agronomy. The most numerous were the works dealing with animal husbandry, mainly animal health, feeding diets, quality of milk and meat. Entomologists mostly investigated the effects of different species on crop production. Numerous papers dealt with biochemical issues, such as chemical composition, antioxidant activity of different compounds of plant or fungal origin, and validation and widening of application of different biochemical methods. We also had several papers on microbiology issues, dealing mostly with microbiological composition of water, food products, as well as antimicrobial activity of different chemical, plant or fungi extracts. Plant investigations covered forage crops and determination of their quality, anatomical analysis and setting of better growing conditions of fruit tree species, as well as work concerning vegetation of wetland systems and its dynamics under the presence of heavy metals or herbicides.
The fact that such an impressive variety of subjects and scientists from different fields gathered in one place, ensures that the field of Applied Biology has bright future. Applicability and interdisciplinary of all presented results is our main impression and the most important value of this session.
